Happy Birthday: Audi quattro Cup turns 20
- The most popular amateur series has attracted over 1 million golfers to the green
- Almost 9000 tournaments worldwide since 1991 debut
- 2010 world finale in Sardinia
INGOLSTADT, Germany — It is a success story in every respect: this year, the Audi quattro Cup is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Over the period of two decades, 1,056,000 golfers have been playing for victory in national tournaments and world finales on the most beautiful golf courses around the world. The 2010 season will soon tee off – and the world’s best golfers will meet for the final showdown in Sardinia.
From Argentina to Australia, from Chile to China, from Spain to South Africa – in more than 50 nations the quattro Cup has acquired prestige and evolved from a good idea into the most successful series for amateur golfers. In the 2009 season the Cup saw one of its most successful years: in 730 tournaments 82,000 participants from 47 nations played for the chance to participate in the world’s finale held in Sydney, Australia. The winners came from Thailand and South Africa.
Audi and international golf – this has been a perfect and successful combination for a long time,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales of AUDI AG. “The quattro Cup is a particularly good example of this. I’d like to thank all Audi partners for their commitment and their organizational support and of course all the participants who have turned a small tournament into a worldwide success story marked by the Four Rings.”
The tournaments on the way to the country finale are played at the invitation of regional Audi partners as “foursomes with selection drive.” In 1991 the Cup started with 51 tournaments in Germany in which more than 6000 players participated right away. Just a year later the Audi quattro Cup became international: in addition to 70 tournaments in Germany, 62 competitions were held in seven other European countries. 1993 saw the first world finale; the venue was Great Britain. In 2002, the record mark of 60,000 participants worldwide was surpassed for the first time.
In each of the past six years the Cup attracted well over 75,000 golfers and now the preparations for its anniversary season are in full swing. The Germany finale will be held at the Frankfurt Golf Club from September 6 to 10, 2010, followed by the world finale a month later in Sardinia (October 8 to 12, 2010). The Pevero Golf Club will play host to the showdown of the world’s best amateur golfers. With its rock formations the 18-hole oceanfront facility is one of the most beautiful and best golf courses in the Mediterranean region.
