Audi supports bid of Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds

  • Aim is for Ryder Cup to celebrate its debut in Germany in 2018
  • One of three candidates: the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds
  • Decision about German applicants will be made on December 8

INGOLSTADT, Germany — The aim of staging the Ryder Cup in Germany in 2018 for the first time since its inaugural event in 1927 is an ambitious one. Audi supports the bid of the Wittelsbacher Ausgleichsfonds in Neuburg an der Donau to host the world's most prestigious golf tournament at which the twelve best players from Europe and the United States, respectively, compete.

Only once has the Ryder Cup not been held in the United States or the United Kingdom: In 1997, Spain hosted the traditional transatlantic duel. By publicly and financially supporting the bidding phase of the Wittelsbacher Golfclub, Audi makes a clear commitment to the region.

"Amateur and professional golf has a high priority at Audi and has enjoyed an equally long and successful tradition," comments Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Executive Board for Marketing and Sales of AUDI AG. "By supporting the Wittelsbacher Golfclub in Neuburg we wish to take a stand on behalf of the region whose major employer is AUDI AG. We look forward to an exciting bidding phase and hope to be able to host one of the highlights in international golf in 2018."

In addition to Neuburg, two other golf courses from the Berlin and Munich regions are still in the race. The final decision of the German venue to bid for hosting the tournament will be announced on December 8, 2009. Other countries that are bidding to host the 2018 Ryder Cup are Sweden, Spain, Portugal, France and the Netherlands. The final decision of the venue will be made in spring of 2011.
